CREATING LASTING FAMILY CONNECTIONS
Creating Lasting Family Connections is a FREE eight-week program designed to support parents raising teens. The program will help parents who are struggling through the teen years teach effective strategies to improve their family relationships, and reinforce positive changes.
Weekly educational components include: understanding adolescent physical and brain development, parenting techniques to improve communication, reduce conflict and improve follow through with consequences, and identification of adolescent substance use patterns and behavior changes that could lead to problem behavior. Individual family counseling sessions are available during the eight weeks, or as a follow-up to families requesting additional help. Two agencies will provide Creating Lasting Family Connections classes under the Livingston Community Prevention Project, Family Resource Center and Livingston Family Center.
Funding for this project is provided by the Washtenaw Community Health Organization and the Michigan Department of Community Health, Office of Drug Control Policy.
NURTURING PARENTING CLASSES
A nationally recognized program for parents of young children, age newborn to 11 years. Families gather for dinner and then separate for learning activities. Learn more about empathy, appropriate expectations, positive discipline, parent- child roles and power and independence.
COST: $75 for one parent; $100 for both parents. Limited scholarships available. To register, contact the Family Resource Center at (517) 548-2200.
FATHERS ONLY PARENTING CLASSES
Fathers, step-fathers and male caregivers learn new attitudes, behaviors and skills that lead to nurturing, rewarding relationships with their children, their partners and family members
COST: $75 per person. Limited scholarships available.

CIRCLE OF PARENTS
A national model support group for male parents and caregivers with children up to age 11. Share your ideas and concerns about parenting. There is no cost to participate in this twice monthly group.

ONGOING PROGRAMS
FREE LEGAL CLINIC
The Family Resource Center offers a free legal clinic two Friday mornings each month.
Participants are offered a 30 minute consultation with a local attorney. Call to schedule an appointment to discuss your legal questions on issues such as divorce, custody, and other family related matters. After the consultation, attorneys are under no obligation to consult further free of charge or to take your case.
MICHIGAN WORKS! ACCESS POINT
The Family Resource Center is partnering with Livingston County Michigan Works! to establish "Access Points" where job seekers can obtain limited services. Through Access Points, The Family Resource Center provides computer access and trained volunteers to help job seekers find and utilize online resources to broaden their job search. Volunteers can also assist with resume writing, practice interviewing skills, provide information about educational and training opportunities and refer job seekers to other services in our area.

CAREER BOUTIQUE
Free professional clothing is available to women for job interviews, returning to school or work, court appearances, or other events that require professional clothing. Each client is offered up to 5 outfits at no charge.

EDUCATION & SUPPORT
HEALTHY FAMILIES LIVINGSTON
For the past ten years, in partnership with St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital, Healthy Families has helped parents build strength and competency in child rearing.
The program provides new parents a long-term resource person they can count on through home visits by family support workers as well as ongoing workshops and support groups. Parents are offered support and education related to infant/child development, parent/infant interaction and parenting issues such as coping skills and attaining personal parenting goals.

STEWARDS OF CHILDREN
This evidence-based workshop, created by Darkness to Light, utilizes video, workbook and group discussion to teach adults seven critical steps for preventing, recognizing and reacting responsibly to child sexual abuse. Led by trained facilitators, this 3 hour workshop is a must for teachers, child care providers, recreational sports organizations, child and family serving agencies, adults who work or volunteer with children, parents and all concerned adults.
CHESTER'S SOLUTION
Chester the Cat has a fluffy tail that everyone wants to touch. The problem? He doesn’t like people touching his tail. This workshop focuses on teaching pre-school and early elementary age students about personal boundaries and their right to say “no” to unwanted touch.
MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING
The CAP Council works with staff members from Livingston County Children’s Protective Services to offer this workshop outlining the signs and symptoms of abuse, the legal and moral obligations to report suspected abuse and what happens inside CPS once a report is filed.
SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME WORKSHOP
This workshop was designed to teach middle school and high school students about how to care for an infant that won’t stop crying. Program utilizes video and oral presentation, along with demonstrations using a life-like doll, to explain why you should never, ever shake a baby! Workshop is the length of a regular class hour and is an ideal addition to curricula for health, life skills and child development classes.
FASD WORKSHOP (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Workshop)
This workshop was designed to teach middle school and high school students about the life-long damage that can result for an unborn child whose mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy. FASD, or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, is an array of disorders including mental retardation, learning and behavior problems, organ dysfunction and physical and neurological deficits caused by fetal alcohol exposure. Utilizing video, oral presentation and a life-like doll, this workshop is the length of a regular class hour and is an ideal addition to curricula for health, life skills and child development classes.
FASD LIVING

CAP KIDS’ FAIR
This free family event, held in Pinckney each year on the Saturday after Memorial Day, provides a fun day of crafts and entertainment for kids and important child development and safety information for parents. Event also offers pony rides, a petting farm and moonwalk, with a small fee for certain activities. |
